Lesson 14

Instructions for Lesson 14

Introduce a fourth spelling pattern that exhibits a |k| sound: ck
(as in pack and dock). We also will learn cks (|ks|), as in rocks and ducks.

I – IV NEW PATTERN. Learn the fourth spelling pattern that has the |k| sound, ck, as in back and lock. Most short-vowel words and syllables that end with a |k| sound are written using the ck spelling pattern (back, duck).

V & VI NEW PATTERN. Learn the cks spelling pattern that has the |k| plus |s| sounds, |ks|, as in rocks and ducks. An s is added to a noun to indicate that there is more than one item (two rocks instead of one rock). An s is added to a third-person singular verb to denote present action (“Frances rocks the baby to sleep.”)

Remember to read, spell, and discuss the meaning of the challenge words.
