Consonant blends at the end of a word (so-called ending blends or end blends) are easier for most students to learn than consonant blends that appear at the beginning of a word. That is why ending blends are introduced first.

I NEW PATTERN. Learn words that end with the consonant blends ps and ts, as in gaps and pets. A few of the words can function as nouns or verbs. As indicated in Lesson 15, an s at the end of a noun means the noun is plural (more than one). An s at the end of a verb indicates present tense (cuts, jots) (“The florist cuts flower stems”; “The newspaper reporter jots interview notes”).
Note: The word apps is spelled with two p’s.

II LEARN words that end with the consonant blends lt, ld, and pt, as in melt, held, and kept.

III LEARN words that end with the consonant blends gs and nd, as in legs and land.

IV LEARN words that end with the consonant blends nd, nt, and mp, as in send, rent, and jump.

V LEARN words that end with the consonant blends sk and st, as in ask and best.

VI LEARN words that end with the consonant blends st, ft, and lk, as in last, gift, and milk.

Difficulty Pronouncing “ulk”

If your student is having difficulty reading words with the ulk ending (sulk, bulk, hulk), have him reread the five words listed in Lesson 6 at Roman numeral V: hull, gull, mull, null, and lull. With a pencil, write the letter k beside the word hull [hull k]. Several times in a row, have your student read hull, then add the sound of |k|: |hull| – |k|, |hull| – |k|, |hull| – |k|. If your student still has trouble, don’t get bogged down. When you begin the next session, do a review of any word that was earlier problematic. Often, it will be easily read this time around.
