Introduce the oo spelling pattern that has four different sounds, as featured in moon, book, flood, and door.
I – III NEW PATTERN. Learn the o and oo spelling patterns that have the |ü| sound, as in do, too, moon, loose, lose, and choose.
III NEW PATTERN. Learn the second wh spelling pattern pronounced like the letter h, |h|, as in who, whom, and whose. Both the |hw| and |h| pronunciations for the wh spelling pattern are voiceless (produce no vocal cord vibration). The wh spelling is also pronounced |w| (with the voiced sound of w). The dictionary is your final authority on pronunciation and spelling. (See Lesson 27)
Keep a dictionary handy for looking up words like loose, an adjective that has the s sound |lüs| (“Chaim has a loose tooth”). Compare this to lose, a transitive verb that has the z sound |lüz| (“James was excited that his basketball team did not lose the game”).
IV NEW PATTERN. Learn the oo spelling pattern pronounced with the |ů| sound, as in book and good.
V NEW PATTERN. Learn the oo spelling pattern pronounced with the short-vowel u sound |ŭ|, as in blood.
REVIEW the oor spelling pattern pronounced with the long-vowel o sound, |ōr|, as in door. An r, m, or n following a vowel or vowels often works a slight sound change in
