Introduce the spelling and pronunciation patterns for the diphthongs oi, oy, ou, and ow, as in boil, boy, out, and owl.
NEW CONCEPT. A diphthong consists of two vowels that are set side-by-side, inhabiting the same syllable, and that create a unique sound. (Di means two.) (Diphthong may be pronounced either |dĭfʹ • thông| or |dĭpʹ • thông|.) The oy in boy and the oi in boil are diphthongs. The ou in out and the ow in owl are also diphthongs..
I NEW PATTERN. Introduce the oi diphthong spelling and pronunciation pattern found in boil and coin. This diphthong, pronounced |ōē| or |ōĭ|, is often encapsulated in a syllable by at least one consonant, as is the case with boil and coin. The oi diphthong comes to us from French. The oi is usually located at the beginning or in the middle of a syllable (the so-called initial or medial positions, respectively).
II LEARN the oy diphthong spelling and pronunciation pattern found in boy and enjoy. The oy diphthong is typically found at the end of syllables or words (final position). The oy letter pairing is derived from the French language.
III LEARN the ou diphthong spelling and pronunciation pattern |ow| typified in the words out and proud. Notice that the word house in Roman numeral III has a silent e.
IV LEARN the ow diphthong spelling and pronunciation pattern |ow|, as seen in the words owl and down.
V & VI REVIEW the oi, oy, ou, and ow diphthongs.
REVIEW, also, the ou and ow spelling and pronunciation patterns that make the sound of the long-vowel o, |ō|, as in soul and snow. [See Lessons 41 and 43]
The patterns for pronouncing the four points of a compass—west, east, north, south—have now been introduced (Lessons 19, 36, 43, and 68, respectively). A list of map and directional terms has been included on page 262.
