Introduce the gh spelling that is pronounced two ways:
|g| and |f|, as in ghetto and rough. Also, sometimes gh is silent, as in light.
This lesson introduces the au sound |ă|, as in laugh, and the ou sound |ŏ|, as in ought and cough.
I NEW PATTERN. Introduce the voiced gh spelling pattern pronounced with a hard g, |g|, as in ghetto. Note that the word Allegheny in this list is a proper name, and the second e in Allegheny is pronounced ǀāǀ.
II REVIEW the gh pattern found in light. [Lesson 81]
LEARN the ou spelling with the |ŏ| sound, as in ought.
III LEARN the gh spelling pattern pronounced |f|, as in rough.
REVIEW the ou spelling that makes a short-vowel u sound |ŭ|, as in rough. [Lesson 67]
PRACTICE the ou spelling that makes a short-vowel o sound |ŏ|, as in cough.
LEARN the au spelling that makes a short-vowel a sound |ă|, as in laugh.
IV & V REVIEW the gh spelling pattern pronounced |g| in ghetto. Also review the gh spelling pattern pronounced |f| in tough. Pay special attention to words in which the gh is silent (flight and eighty).
REVIEW the ou spelling pronounced |ŏ|, as in ought.
REVIEW the au spelling pronounced |ă|, as in laugh.
Since you are nearing the end of the program (only five lessons to go!), you should soon select a book that you and your student will read together. This is a very important part of this curriculum.
